Neal Philp Rider: WWII Navy veteran, Rhino Guardian

Through the International Rhino Foundation’s Rhino Guardians program, supporters can create a legacy that continues protecting rhinos and the ecosystems they depend on for generations to come.
One such legacy belongs to Neal Philp Rider.
Born on January 2, 1926, Neal lived a life shaped by curiosity, service and quiet kindness. At just 17, he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, demonstrating a sense of duty and courage.
After the war, Neal went on to work for many years as a fire inspector, a role that reflected both his sharp intellect and his commitment to keeping others safe. He was known by friends as a deeply intelligent man who read constantly and was curious about the world. Though reserved, he was exceptionally kind and caring, with a calm presence and a wealth of knowledge he was always willing to share.
Neal lived to be 98 years old and maintained close friendships that spanned more than 40 years. In planning his estate, he chose to include the International Rhino Foundation, ensuring that the causes he cared about would continue to be supported long after his lifetime.
His bequest is now part of the Rhino Guardians program, a community of people who believe that protecting rhinos is a responsibility that extends beyond the present. Planned gifts like Neal’s provide stable, long-term support for anti-poaching efforts, habitat protection, community engagement and the science needed to secure a future for all five rhino species.
In a world where wildlife faces increasing pressure, these forward-looking gifts are more critical than ever. They allow conservation programs to plan boldly and invest in solutions that will protect rhinos for generations to come.
Neal’s life was marked by service, learning and compassion. Through his planned gift, those qualities now live on in the forests and savannas where rhinos roam. His legacy is a powerful reminder that each of us can make a lasting difference and that through thoughtful planning, our impact can continue well into the future.
