Rhinos translocation project at Manas National Park, Assam, India
To date, 25 greater one-horned rhinos have been reintroduced to Manas National Park, 10 wild-caught animals translocated from the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, another eight from Kaziranga National Park, and seven rescued animals from India’s Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation. Since 2012, ten calves have been born, but seven adult rhinos also have been killed by poachers. As a result, two orphaned calves are now being hand-raised in Manas and anti-poaching efforts are being stepped up.
