Sinyo Handoko has worked in a Rhino Protection Unit (RPU) in Indonesia’s Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra for 16 years. With his fellow RPU members, he spends at least 15 days each month on patrol deep in a remote jungle, protecting one of the world’s most endangered species, the Sumatran rhino.

“I have realized the importance of Sumatran rhinos to the forest and I enjoy being part of the team that protects them. The Sumatran rhino is an umbrella species, playing an important role in the ecosystem. We must protect them from extinction.”

Being away from his wife and children for long periods of time is difficult, but Sinyo’s family understands how important his work is. “I tell them about my experiences patrolling, surveying and sometimes confronting poachers. They are proud of me.”

It is extremely rare to see a Sumatran rhino in the wild, but Sinyo saw one in 2013 while conducting surveys in the park. To this day, it was his favorite moment on the job. He also enjoys the fellowship of other members, cooking together and laughing before falling asleep.

Today, on GivingTuesday, we want to thank you for your commitment to rhino conservation.

Your contributions fund 31 Rhino Protection Units in Indonesia – anti-poaching teams like Sinyo’s, from local communities that continuously patrol all of the world’s remaining habitats for Sumatran and Javan rhinos, monitoring wildlife, removing traps and snares and apprehending poachers and encroachers. Throughout the pandemic, the RPUs have remained steadfast, quarantining at home while off-duty and limiting their contact with family and friends so they can continue to patrol and protect rhinos.

But now, significant decreases in government and donor revenue caused by the pandemic are jeopardizing their work.

For 25 years, the International Rhino Foundation has stood with local communities working to protect Indonesian rhinos and their habitats, and we’re not turning our backs on them now.

Can you help?

Today, on Giving Tuesday, we’re trying to raise $50,000, to fund the operations of one Indonesian Rhino Protection Units for one full year.

Two generous, long-time IRF donors have agreed to match every gift you make, dollar for dollar, today. That means your gift will go three times as far and make triple the impact for Sumatran and Javan rhinos and the people guarding them.

Please join us today to ensure that rhinos will survive and thrive in the wild. We are stronger with you!
