“Crockett” is the first southern black rhino born at a private breeding facility in North America since IRF launched the Southern Black Rhino Sustainability program in 2012. The program involves well-coordinated breeding efforts between North American, South American and Australian institutions, the pairings designed to establish a viable, managed population that could eventually provide animals for reintroduction to the wild. “Crockett” was born at a Texas facility earlier this month following a 15-month pregnancy typical for black rhinos.
